Best Nightclubs in Orange County, California in 2021

Orange County, California might be known for its proximity to popular day time attractions like Disneyland in nearby Anaheim, Knott’s Berry Farm in Buena Park, as well as its many beaches and tourist attractions, but that does not mean that the nightlife in Orange County is not of a similar caliber. At Orange County, you can go out with friends and explore the nightclubs which might not offer the same kind of exhilarating experience as rides in theme parks, but do have plenty of alcohol, amazing music, and beautiful people. You can book bottle service, buy tickets or sign up for a guest list for our top five Orange County venues on Discotech.

California Senate Passes Bill Allowing Last Call to Extend to 4 AM

Early this year, California Senator Scott Wiener began a campaign for the ‘Let Our Communities Adjust Late Night Act’, which proposed that each municipality within the state be given authority to choose their last call hour, possibly pushing it back to as late as 4AM.

Previously, all venues throughout the entire state were limited to a 2AM last call for alcohol services. “Nightlife matters a lot, culturally and economically, and it’s time to allow local communities more flexibility,” Senator Scott Wiener argued.

The Senator’s efforts have paid off as his proposed 4AM nightlife bill has officially passed in the Senate, allowing it to now move to Assembly for a review and a vote before reaching the governor for final word to “allow but not require local communities to let their bars and nightclubs serve alcohol until 4AM”.

This is a huge move that will affect party hotspots in the state like Los Angeles, San Diego and San Francisco if it passes through the next phase.

CONNECTION. If one word sums up the phenomenon of Above & Beyond then that is surely it. Whether it’s the thousands of fans singing their lyrics back at shows around the world, from Bangalore to Beirut to Brixton, or the millions that tune in for their weekly Group Therapy (ABGT) radio show, connection – real human connection – is at the heart of all things that define this multitalented trio.

Above & Beyond is Jono Grant, Tony McGuinness and Paavo Siljamaki, and their story is one of constant movement over a 14-year history. From their early days as hotly-tipped producers remixing Radiohead and Madonna, to their current global standing, Jono, Tony and Paavo have remained as down-to-earth and determined as ever – always focused on the next goal.

The only dance act in history to win the Essential Mix Of The Year award twice (for their 2004 and 2011 efforts), the London-based trio have played to one million people on the Barra Beach in Rio de Janeiro (New Year’s Eve in 2007), sold out the Hollywood Palladium faster than anyone in history, and even had their track “Buzz” chosen to soundtrack the launch of Richard Branson’s Virgin Galactic SpaceShipTwo in the Mojave desert. As these landmarks rack up, the non-stop pulse of their global touring keeps them connected to their growing international fan base. Each week brings another crowd, another country and often another continent, and an ABGT radio broadcast heard by over 25 million people.

A band first and foremost, Above & Beyond are songwriters as much as they are DJs. Their latest project, ‘Above & Beyond Acoustic,’ showcases their deeply rooted musicianship and classical training. Slated for release as a movie and album at the beginning of 2014, the trio has performed the project live both at London’s intimate Porchester Hall, and in two sold-out performances at LA’s renowned, 6,000-capacity Greek Theatre. Working with three singers, a string quartet, harpist, drummer and bassist, Tony sings and plays guitar, mandolin and ukulele, Paavo hits the grand piano, and Jono plays the Rhodes piano, guitar and vibraphone. The resulting product is unlike any undertaking by a dance music act in history. As Billboard noted: “Above & Beyond created one of the finest and more memorable shows in EDM history.”

Before the acoustic project, their second album Group Therapy took their sound to great new heights in 2011. The follow-up to 2006’s widely acclaimed debut Tri-State, the album draws on musical reference points as diverse as French cosmic pop heroes Air, American singer-songwriter Jeff Buckley and soundtrack master Hans Zimmer. “We are always looking to explore new territory, but try to operate in our own way rather than just trying to follow trends,” explains Jono. The combined result on Group Therapy was unmistakably Above & Beyond – a cohesive album that was described by Mixmag as “the artist album of the year.”

At the heart of the album’s allure, of course, were songs of loves lost, confused and found; sung by the distinctive Richard Bedford and former Faithless singer/songwriter Zoë Johnston. “Songs have an impact which is quite unparalleled in art,” believes Tony. “Poetry can be powerful, great literature is another great informer and educator, but few of us can remember any significant words from the great books or poems we read. But something amazing happens when you put words to music.”

Featuring two BBC Radio 1 playlisted singles (“Sun & Moon” and “Thing Called Love”) and a Sirius BPM Chart #1, the album’s many songs have connected in a way that so few dance tracks – vocal or otherwise – ever manage. “Since releasing our Group Therapy Album it’s brought us even closer to our audience around the world,” explains Paavo. “The one thing I didn’t expect to happen on the scale it has, is how people from around the world have shared their stories with us as they go through amazingly positive or incredibly difficult times in their lives. It’s really touched us all and feels like a driving force for new creativity.”

The intense atmosphere at Above & Beyond’s increasingly ambitious live performances has redrawn the parameters of the DJ set. While so many superstar DJs place themselves at the heart of their performance, Above & Beyond’s focus is always on getting closer to their crowd and making them part of the action. Whether that’s by bringing fans up on stage to press the play button on their CDJs, or communicating with the crowd via visual screens and messages typed out on the spot, the effect is to make everyone in the room feel like they are part of an experience that is at once epic, immersive and interactive. “Some time ago we realized that on the best nights we have it’s always a three way thing: us, the music and the people, and we see improving the communication between all three as helping a good party turn incredible, ” explains Paavo. “The soundsystem, lights and visuals are all there to help people connect to the music, with each other and with us better. A Group Therapy experience, ideally, is positive, uniting and life-affirming for all involved.”

Throughout this process, Above & Beyond has continued to release forward-thinking instrumental club music – such as their latest single “Mariana Trench” – on their renowned Anjunabeats label. An essential part of their story, the label is now in its 13th year and has helped to nurture artists like the London-based innovator Mat Zo, the eclectic genius Andrew Bayer and Russian star Arty. Independently spirited but run with ambitious vision, the label has grown like a family. “Dance music tends to be very short term, but we aim to release records that will leave a lasting impression on people and are listened to in years to come” explains Jono. “We try to operate in our own way rather than trying to follow trends.”

Time Nightclub Grand Opening in the OC this Weekend

Nightlife in Orange County is about to experience a major overhaul. A much needed one at that. In the early 2000s there weren’t many choices for those that wanted to stay out dancing and drinking past 10 p.m. You could wait in line at Dennis Rodman’s club on PCH, Josh Slocum’s, drive to Anaheim and mix it up with the over 18 crowd at the Boogie, or wait in line to stand four deep at the bar at The Yard House and dance when nobody was looking.

That all changed 13 years ago when Sutra opened at “Triangle Square.” Orange County finally had a place to party. A place to see Lil’ Jon growl into the mic or LMFAO spray champagne, to watch Ludacris promote his liquor and Paul Oakenfold whip the crowd into a dancing mob. TIME Nightclub Orange County

Sutra, once a restaurant, had to be turned into a nightclub. It was never a perfect fit, but Identity Management group was able to make it successful for over a decade. This past weekend Sutra closed its doors.

Now rebranded and completely made over, The Triangle has attracted restaurants like La Vida Cantina, Tavern+Bowl and H20 Sushi to fill the shopping center once filled with Virgin Records and NikeTown.

Identity Management group is set to open their new venture TIME Nightclub this Thursday to the beats of German DJ Icon Markus Schulz.

You enter TIME on the street level of the shopping center through doors near the current valet and are greeted by large LED walls that tower overhead and wrap around to the ceiling. The first thing you notice upon entering the main area is how cavernous and open the giant space under the dome of the former NikeTown feels. It is massive.

We wanted to bring an amazing experience to Southern California, a true nightclub, that is exciting from the second you walk through the doors,” Steven says. “The canvas of the space helped inspire our design team to create the unique layout. We are really striving to bring a new era of nightlife to Southern California and we believe we have accomplished that.”

They definitely did. The palate is bold. Floor-to-ceiling kelly green painted wood logs mark the entrance to the ladies room, ten times oversized zebra patterns line the back wall, and a rose gold tinted mirror backs the bar. The club also boasts a lounge within the Ladies room that has access to the bar. No more standing in line for drinks on “Girls Nights Out.” TIME Nightclub Orange County

Club-goers will be astonished by the magnitude of lighting displays and art pieces that breathe life into Time Nightclub. It not only boasts a state-of-the-art Funktion One sound system, but a fully immersive lighting experience, designed by Steve Lieberman from SJ Lighting, that will really add that “wow” factor of this spot. “Without giving away too much, the special effects will allow guests to feel like they are in the middle of the party from any point within the club,” Steven says.

The football stadium size LED screen (20’x30′) making up the DJ wall and the over dance floor programmable chandelier with over 5,000 programmable orbs are further evidence of the “wow” response TIME will surely induce.

Orange County was in need of a fun injection and it’s about TIME this club opened. See you this Thursday.

Sutra Nightclub Closing this Weekend

Sutra nightclub in Costa Mesa is closing this weekend for good, after a 13-year run at the Triangle, the restaurant and entertainment complex in Costa Mesa.

But without missing a beat, or a weekend, the Newport Beach management company for Sutra, Identity Management, plans to open a new club Thursday in the Triangle complex – in the space once occupied by Niketown. That space, under the high-visibility corner spot topped by a dome bearing the complex’s name, has sat empty since 2005.

Sutra has had a long list of well-known DJs and rap artists perform at the venue over the years, including Ice Cube, Snoop Dogg, Ludacris, Nelly, Paul Oakenfold and LMFAO.

Steven Wright, marketing director for Identity Management, confirmed Friday what Sutra had posted on its Facebook over the past week. The venue is in the midst of a three-day lineup of farewell shows: Dutch DJ duo Basejackers were at Sutra on Thursday, DJ Steven Wright was to perform Friday night, and Saturday would be the last event at Sutra, with Dutch DJ Sander Van Doorn.

Wright said the new venue, called Time Nightclub, will be bigger, roomier and more flexible.

“We’re closing Sutra. We’re opening a totally new concept,” Wright said. “We wanted to move into a larger space. It’s a nightclub built as a nightclub.”

The space now occupied by Sutra was once a restaurant, which means a lot of unusable space, such as the footprint of the former kitchen (Sutra doesn’t serve food), Wright said. Time Nightclub will have more floorspace, a larger dance floor and a full stage. The venue opens Thursday with a planned show by German-American DJ Markus Schulz.

“It was almost like the perfect space for it,” Wright said of the former Niketown footprint. “(It’s) almost like a cathedral space.”

With the full stage setup and a removeable DJ booth, Time Nightclub will continue in the electronic music vein of Sutra, but also move toward live music, possibly including Top 40 acts, hip-hop and country, Wright said.

“We really have a diverse venue now (at Time Nightclub) where we can produce even country shows,” he said. “(It will be) something similar to the Observatory, but with a more VIP feel.”
