Miami Music Week 2017 Guide

The Ides of March and St. Patty’s Day have now passed, which means that Spring Break is finally upon us.  And the last thing you party kids probably want while on your Spring Break is a history lesson.  Unless, perhaps, it’s a fun lesson on one of the longest-running Spring Break parties in America??? (Bear with us, please!)

Decades before the Coachella Music Festival became the most coveted destination for every smartphone-toting, selfie-taking, head-nodding twentysomething dreamer on the planet, the Winter Music Conference was THE place to be.  Launched in Miami, Florida in 1985, the WMC  was the first global gathering of electronic dance music (EDM) industry insiders: executives, label managers, headlining artists, up-and-coming talent, back-room producers, PR representatives, press, and partying fans.  For many, the conference was initially treated as a business trip rather social atmosphere, with educational seminars, panels, workshops, DJ showcases, and other training events.

Winter Music Conference

Then, in 1999, along came the Ultra Music Festival.  A one-day event for its first eight years, the UMF or “Ultra” is Miami’s outdoor electronic dance music (EDM) festival that takes place every March.  As EDM has surged in popularity worldwide over the past decade, this festival has grown from a two-day to now a three-day event, and the 2017 version of UMF is now one of the premier party destinations for Spring Break college kids and wealthy foreign travelers alike, with attendance expected to hit 175,000-200,000 revelers.

Ultra Music Festival

So then, what is “Miami Music Week” all about? Technically, it’s the combination of both the Winter Music Conference “business/technical side” of EDM and the Ultra Music Festival “concert/performance side” of EDM into one week-long mega-event for the city of Miami.   Above and beyond the official events organized by the WMC planners and the UMF planners, the rest of the city’s local hotspots and businesses join in on the party, with performances by over 1,000 artists in over 200 events held in various venues from nightclubs to bars to restaurants to hotel pools to public areas such as Lincoln Road and the Miami beaches.

Now that you’re all caught up with the history, back to the present! This year’s MMW, running from March 18-26, promises to be even bigger and better than years past.  Apart from attending the gargantuan Ultra Music Festival itself, here’s a small sampling of the marquee party events in town, the full list of which you can browse and then book table reservations, tickets, or guest list for using the Discotech app.

Best EDM (Electronic Dance) Clubs in Miami

Miami’s known for nightlife, so it’s no surprise that they have some of the best EDM clubs in the country that are open til the sun comes up! Whether you’re into big room house, underground techno, progressive house, deep house, dubstep, or trap, you’ll be sure to find a venue that suits your taste in this nocturnal neon city. Check out the Discotech app to view event calendars, sign up for free guestlists, buy tickets, and reserve tables. Here are some of the best dance clubs in Miami for your nightlife bucketlist:

Club Space

Located in downtown Miami, 16-year old Club Space is an afterhours institution that’s open 24/7 on weekends. The multi-room club has an infamous terrace for those who want to welcome the sunrise with a bang! No dresscode, no judgment, and no last call! Now that’s a recipe for a rager.

Do Not Sit on the Furniture

Owned by DJ Behrouz and intimately referred to as Do Not Sit by the regulars, this forward-thinking South Beach gem is perfect for deep house and techno lovers who appreciate low-key venues focused on the music.

E11even

Part lounge, part restaurant, part strip club, part mega club…E11even truly has it all! Come here if you want to experience a glamorous night of people-watching and bottle popping with aerial dancers to boot….just remember: No pics allowed! What happens at E11even stays at E11even.

Heart

Another 24-hour option in downtown Miami, Heart is a multi-level, multi-genre playing afterhours spot boasting a spankin’ new Funktion One sound system. The wide open dancefloor is uninterrupted by VIP tables, so you know what their priorities are!

Liv

One of the most upscale clubs in South Beach, Liv attracts celebrities and big name DJs on the regular. Since it’s located at the Fontainebleau hotel, you could technically stay on the premises all weekend and experience the best of Miami 24/7! Come here if you want to splurge on VIP experiences and get LIT!

Nikki Beach

Infamous enough to have satellite operations across exotic international locations (Ibiza, Bali, Dubai, Saint Tropez, etc.), Nikki Beach is an indoor/outdoor danceclub+ seafood restaurant with one of the most fabulous Sunday brunch buffets in Miami! This isn’t your average brunch – think: DJs, live music, Go-go dancers, and an all around cool, energetic vibe that transports you to Ibiza!

Story

Boasting one of the best sound systems and interiors of any club in the country, Story appeals to fans across all EDM genres, depending on the night. Fridays are generally for the big festival headliners, like Tiesto, while Saturdays are reserved for cutting edge underground acts, like Chris Liebing. Take your pick, though we recommend trying both! This high-end club never gets it wrong.

Trade

Located in the heart of South Beach on Collins Avenue, Trade’s jungle vibes and eclectic lineup will surely get you in the groove any given night. Distinct from many of the glitzy clubs in SoBe, Trade appeals to guests who are there for the music and want to skip the velvet rope rituals.

Treehouse

Kitschy, quirky, and cool, Treehouse is a triple threat. The atmosphere is dark and brooding with a slight nautical flair that makes you want to surf the sonic waves all night long.  While the main dancehall is urban-chic, the outdoor patio is a lush lounge that helps you understand their whimsical name. Treehouse offers the perfect balance between a club and a lounge, and boasts an eclectic, vibrant crowd that will keep you coming back for more.

There’s always new venues opening up in the Magic City, so make sure to check out the Discotech app for updates on the latest, greatest edm clubs in Miami!

Mansion Miami Closing it’s Doors

For the past 11 years, Mansion has been one of the giants of Miami Beach nightlife, but now it appears the nightclub’s future is uncertain.

Icon Hospitality has confirmed that Mansion will close its doors next week. On Friday, September 4, 2015, Mansion is having Nicky Romero perform for what it is calling on Facebook “Mansion Closing Weekend.”

“Nicky Romero takes to the Mansion Nightclub decks one last time during Mansion Closing Weekend,” the event’s Facebook page says.

When Mansion opened in 2004, taking over the space formerly occupied by another iconic nightclub, Level, it seemed to signal the arrival of Miami’s nightlife scene on a global scale. South Beach almost immediately shifted to a bottle-service-oriented experience, and Mansion was at one point the place to be if you wanted to show off how many bottles you could buy in one night. The venue also hosted many iconic DJs and performers like Deadmau5, David Guetta, Justice, Laidback Luke, and even some off-kilter shows like a performance by a recently hospitalized Britney Spears after her very public meltdown in 2007, and a raunchy set by Peaches.

But sometimes Mansion’s bottle-service clientele would clash with performers, resulting in the venue cutting sets short. It happened to both DJ Shadow and Dennis Ferrer. In February 2012, after his set was stopped, Ferrer tweeted, “Haha @mansion_miami made me get off the decks!! said I don’t play commercial enough!! WTF!!!!!”

Still, with its stunning aerial dancers and ornate interior, Mansion has managed to stay afloat for much longer than most. But Miami’s club scene is an evolving landscape. The recent emergence of places like Libertine and Do Not Sit on the Furniture point to a shift in tastes toward smaller, more intimate venues. It begs the question: Is the mega nightclub on its way out in Miami? Places like Space and LIV endure, so certainly not yet.

We’ll keep you updated on what will become of Mansion’s space as more details emerge. It’s very possible that Mansion may undergo a renovation + name change and come back bigger and better than ever.
